The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in the process of updating the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in Calaveras County. The information on this page is intended to provide information regarding this process.

June 17, 2010 - Final updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) were completed   

The FEMA Letter of Final Determination was sent to the County Board of Supervisors informing them that the updated FIRMs are complete for the county. This begins the six month grace period to allow individuals who will be required to purchase flood insurance for the first time an opportunity to do so before the new maps become effective on December 17, 2010.

Fall of 2010 – FEMA will conduct public meetings

December 17, 2010 - New FEMA FIRMs will become effective   

This is when the updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) will become the “official maps” for flood insurance in Calaveras County. If you will be required to purchase flood insurance you should purchase it before this date to receive a substantial discount.

History of FEMA Floodplain Mapping Update in Calaveras County
  • September 5, 1990 – FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Calaveras County became effective.
  • February 28, 2008 - FEMA meet with county staff to begin the FIRM update process.
  • August 12, 2008 – Introduction of the updated Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance to the BOS. FEMA proposed to the BOS incorporation of the CA Department of Water Resources (DWR) Awareness Flood Areas into the FIRMs for Calaveras County.
  • August 19, 2008 - BOS adopted the updated Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance (Chapter 15.06).
  • September 16, 2008 – BOS approved a minute order giving the Calaveras County Floodplain Administrator authority to request that FEMA incorporate the DWR Awareness Flood Areas into the NFIP updated Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).
  • March 2009 – County Staff reviewed the pre-preliminary updated FIRMs.
  • July 7th and 8th 2009 – FEMA public meetings in San Andreas and Angels Camp to review preliminary updated FIRMs.
  • December 2, 2009 – FEMA public meetings in San Andreas to review the revised-preliminary updated FIRMs.
  • June 2010 - Final updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) became available.
