Program Description
The Tobacco Prevention Program is a state funded program that works to create tobacco-free living, working, and recreational areas in Calaveras County. The focus of the program is to:
  • Counter pro-tobacco influences
  • Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Reduce youth access to tobacco
  • Promote quit services
Who is eligible for program services?
Community Volunteer opportunities for youth and adults to participate in the promotion of tobacco free communities are open in the following areas:
  • Tobacco-free parks
  • Tobacco-free outdoor eating areas
  • ASAP [Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention] Coalition of community members and local organizations to promote tobacco prevention
     
Tobacco Education materials are available at no cost to community members. Information on tobacco laws in California is also available to community members and organizations.
           
Tobacco Quit Kits are available at no cost for youth and adults who are ready to quit tobacco use. The kits include referral information to the California Helpline. 
 
What are the eligibility criteria?
There are no eligibility criteria for volunteers
 
Quit Kits are available to any resident who is interested in quitting.

Quit Kits are available by mail or may be picked up Monday through Friday at the Public Health Annex.

Quit kits are available at the Public Health Annex located at 373 W. St Charles Street, Suite B, in San Andreas. 
 
Is there a cost for the service?
There is no cost for tobacco quit kits.
 
Quit Smoking InformationCessation 
 
The California Smokers' Help Line is offering Calaveras County adult smokers who are ready to quit, free nicotine starter patch kits.  The supply is expected to last through January 2012.  Call now for more information 1-800-NO-BUTTS.

Community Action
Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention - "Local people solve local problems best." 
 
The coalition was formed through the efforts of the Tobacco Prevention Program and Substance Abuse Prevention.  Partnerships were formed with community organizations and residents to address the concerns of tobacco use and exposure and youth substance use and abuse.  Meetings are held every other month and are open to the community.  Those interested in becoming a member or attending meetings may contact Michael Magaña, Tobacco Prevention Project Director at 754-6019 or mmagana@co.calaveras.ca.us
