Correctional Officer Recruitment
Our Corrections staff comes from many different backgrounds. Some have wanted to be in law enforcement from the start. Others have held different jobs before starting their careers in law enforcement. We have officers that were previously ironworkers, in the military, teachers, state park guides and even a fast food clerk.
In order to apply for a position as a Correctional Officer in Calaveras County you need to hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and to be over the age of 18. Once your application is submitted you will be asked to take a short written test similar to a basic education test. You will then be given an oral interview, a background test, and a psychological examination.
As a correctional officer, your duties will include; understanding and carrying out oral and written directions, writing clear and comprehensive reports, maintaining security of the facility and inmates, transporting inmates to and from the facility, making sure the needs of the inmates are being met. These duties can involve food service, medical care, legal issues and programs for rehabilitation.
The Sheriffs Department will send you to several classes to aid you in the performance of your duties. Two of the most important classes you must pass are PC 832 (firearms & arrest, search and seizure) and CORE, the Correctional Officer Academy.
It’s been said correctional officers walk the toughest beat. We also walk one of the most rewarding ones.
